QUICK REVIEW:
Before being changing their name to Advanced Voting Solutions
they were the New Shoup Company. This is a fairly new company started
by industry veterans in 2002. Most of us know Howard Van Pelt from his days
at Global.
AVS is using wireless technology in
their voting systems (this is the 802.11b version). Here the twist: rather
than have to open every voting machine to program ballots, this system simply
"beams" the ballot via wireless networking. That way, all the
machines can sit like quiet soldiers in a row in the warehouse.
AVS also markets the InkaVote Plus
system. AVS is partnered with Unisyn out of Carlsbad, CA. For
information on the Inkavote system, Click Here to read the
brochure (.pdf format). AVS also has an electronic pollbook
offering called, WINpollbook. To read more about this,

As of Dec. 2007 it appears that AVS may be in trouble. They have
declined to be certified by the EAC and there are tremendous issues with their
systems that have been sold in Pennsylvania. Since many states require
federal (voluntary) certification, this appears to be a sign that AVS is in
trouble in this market.
